Guided or Self-Guided Rainforest Walks?

Both can be rewarding. The right choice depends on where you are, what you hope to see, and how much you enjoy searching on your own.

Updated: October 29, 2026. Tour availability, park rules and prices change, so check the booking page or park authority before you go.

What a guide adds

The rainforest hides more than it shows. Guides spot camouflaged animals, recognise calls, carry a scope that turns a distant speck into a detailed view, and explain the ecology behind what you see. On a first visit, a guided walk can multiply the number of things you notice. It also teaches you how to look, which makes later self-guided walks better.

What walking alone offers

Walking on your own gives you silence, flexibility and the pleasure of finding things yourself. Many reserves and national parks allow independent visits on marked trails. If you enjoy slow walking and have binoculars, an independent walk early in the morning can be excellent, especially after a guided outing in the same area.

When a guide is required or strongly advised

  • Corcovado National Park requires authorised guides.
  • Night walks: for safety and for finding animals, go with a guide.
  • Turtle-nesting beaches such as Tortuguero allow night access only with authorised guides.
  • Remote or unmarked trails, especially in heavy rain.

A balanced approach

A good pattern is to book one guided walk at the start of your stay in each region, then explore on your own afterwards. The guide will often suggest where to look, and you will recognise more species.

Safety on your own

  • Stay on marked trails and tell someone your plan.
  • Carry water, a headlamp and a charged phone, but do not count on signal.
  • Watch where you put your hands. Some snakes and insects are well camouflaged.
  • Start early, as afternoon rain is common.
