Why go

Sarapiquí is a river valley on the northern Caribbean slope where lowland rainforest meets farmland. It is a practical choice if you want true lowland rainforest without the boat logistics of Tortuguero, and it is a well-known region for birding and night walks. The sloth in the photo above was photographed in Sarapiquí.

Getting there

The region is roughly two hours by road from San José, via the Braulio Carrillo highway. It is also a natural stop between San José and La Fortuna, or on the way to the Caribbean coast.

Experiences

  • Guided reserve walks on private reserves and biological stations.
  • Night walks for frogs, insects and sleeping birds.
  • River trips: rafting and floats on the Sarapiquí River are offered locally; difficulty varies by section.

Practical notes

  • Heat and humidity: it is warmer and more humid than Monteverde. Bring light, quick-dry clothing.
  • Rain: frequent at any time of year.
